  1. 1851 37 Gold Street, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire

    1891 Wilton House, Shenley, Hertfordshire
    1901 Cottages, Shenley, Hertfordshire
1911 Shenley, Barnet, Hertfordshire. Living with them was grandson Frederick FREESTONE (11) School
    Information from Margaret TAYLOR 6/2/2006
A cousin did some research years ago and found out that Thomas was an illegitimate foundling born in a workhouse in Cambridge where he was taught the baking trade. This information came long ago before computers made research more reliable. (Note from JKW: HOWEVER, I have now received information which says this was not the case. See "Information from Wheaton FREESTONE" below)
My father Robert 12th of the 13 children told me a lot about Thomas but not that he was illegitimate , It seems that Thomas came to Shenley and worked as Baker for the Scales family, and brought up all his family working for them but when he, Thomas, was 50 the Scales son took over the business. Thomas was out of a job with I think 5 children still at home. My Father said that Thomas was held in such regard by Ranks the Millers that they backed him and built a bake house, installed ovens etc and granddad was away. He was joined in the business by his last 3 sons Wheaton, Robert(my father) and James (Note from JKW: See "Information from Wheaton FREESTONE" below). The Family opened businesses in two nearby small towns, and the next generation carried on until the late fifties
I have always been interested in Thomas and wanted to find out more about him. My father called him a scholar, because when he wasn't working he had his head in a book. I said where did he get his books, and it seems that one of the local gentry allowed him the use of his library. From this he went in for an exam, in competition with 30 school masters and came top. The certificate exists and was left to my brother who seems to have lost it, imagine!! I am trying to locate it. I think this must have been the beginning of the Workers Education Association. There was I think among the upper middle classes a wish to educate the deserving poor. Anyway he went on to become involved in politics and was proposed as socialist M P with Kier Hardy and went to London to stand, but returned to Shenley a bit shook up. My dad said It felt a bit too revolutionary for him; he decided he was a Liberal.
One other thing that might interest you is that Wheaton is scattered through the family as a first or second fore name The only ones I know of for sure are my fathers older brother and his son but my
father talked about this strange Christian name in the family. He said it was because the family were farmers and millers in the Cambridge fens for generations thus are legends made!!
    Information from Wheaton FREESTONE 28.6.2007
Thomas FREESTONE was not illegitimate or anything. He was employed by the workhouse as a baker. Second paragraph basically true exceppt for name James, that name should be Ernest John (nickname jainey). Yes, Ranks did loan money to start the business. Thomas had to commit the business to always buy flour from Ranks.
    Method used to repay loan:
Every sack (bag) of flour (1cwt.)supplied had a depoit on it. When the sacks were returned (emtpy), the deposit was not returned but used to repay the loan over a number of years.
Yes, Thomas was scholarly and did borrow books probably from the RICHEE family who were farmers, and who in later years did start a library for local people. He used his education to teach young unemployed men of the village to help them on their way in life. My aunts tell me he did dabble in local politics but no more than that, possibly attending some rallies.
The last paragraph about WHEATON name we know the origin of that. In my searches of FREESTONES I think I may have got back to the 1770s when they were farmers in Earsham, Norfolk.

He was married to Clarisss UNKNOWN but no other details are available
We have not been able to find a Charles/Charles J/Charles John FREESTONE marriage to a Clarissa and from information we have since found we believe he married an Ethel ALDRED. It is possible that if Ethel had died, and Charles was posted abroad, a marriage to a Clarissa could have taken place.

    Victory Medal
Given the information we have available it is likely that C.J. FREESTONE was entitled to the Victory medal, also called the Inter Allied Victory Medal. This medal was awarded to all who received the 1914 Star or 1914-15 Star and, with certain exceptions, to those who received the British War Medal. It was never awarded alone. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.
Eligibility for this award consisted of having been mobilised, fighting, having served in any of the theatres of operations, or at sea, between midnight 4th/5th August, 1914, and midnight, 11th/12th November, 1918. Women who served in any of the various military organisations in a theatre of operations were also eligible.
    British War Medal
From the information available to us, it is very possible that C.J. FREESTONE was entitled to the British War Medal for service in World War One. This British Empire campaign medal was issued for services between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918.
The medal was automatically awarded in the event of death on active service before the completion of this period.

A spinster, occupations Postmistress and Book Keeper working in Elstree, Hertfordshire until about 1930 when she stopped to look after her mother. She was a small precise lady and a stickler for punctuality and would be decidedly feisty if timekeeping was not kept. She went to work. The story goes that she went to work every day, until one day the bus left her behind because it left 2 or 3 minutes early. She checked her watch then crossed the road to a shop and phoned the man in Watford (about 6 miles away) and complained so fiercely that he sent a car to take her to work. She always arrived at the stop on time and it’s said that the bus crews set their watches by her. She lived in her house from when it was built about 1908 until her death and never altered it except for getting mains water, even the lavatory stayed down the bottom of the garden. Just a personal note, I used to love going round there as a kid, toasting crumpets lots of butter, it was a magical place to me, with old cooking range, the flat irons on the side.

Rosetta worked in a very large London store during WWI and apparently she enjoyed a very active social life being very popular among the junior officers at the parties she was at. She had a child out of wedlock, who Florence bought up.
Rosetta moved up north and married Unknown but had a daughter Doreen, who sent a christmas card every year to my Aunt Peg, but sadly no card came last year 2010. I think she was married to Tom Allartson. I haven't found a record yet, the address is 36 Redhill Drive, Yew Tree Estate, Bredbury, Nr Stockport, Cheshire.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
