MARSHALL Chart 0400

This is a Chart for Henry Marshall and Mary Ann Matthews and George Berrill

Anne GILMOUR wrote on 20th January 2016 the following:
I have finally found and attach the family picture of the Marshalls which I assume must have been taken around 1900 putting Charles (on the left and the youngest) at 14 and Minnie (standing in the centre) at 18. The next youngest person seems to be standing on her right, so that must be Bertie. The oldest looking son is I think is standing on the right is presumably Harry who would be 34. Going by moustaches, I wonder if Alfred James is sitting on the right (aged 28) and Albert George (aged 24) is standing on Minnie’s left. That leaves Arthur Edmund standing on the left of the picture (aged 32) and either Ada (Elizabeth) aged 30 or Edith Ann aged 26 sitting next to father Henry. The photographer is Hellis & Sons but the name is in small letters on the bottom left of the mounting with no other hints.

Anne GILMOUR wrote on 20th January 2016 the following:

Attached is a picture that I had understood to be Minnie’s parents - Henry Marshall and Mary Ann Matthews. There is writing on the back which says that it was taken in 1863 when both were 21 years old. The ages are about right, but your findings are that they were not married for another 3 years and in 1863 Mary Ann you think was still married to George Berrill. So perhaps this is not a picture of Minnie’s parents after all. Interestingly the framers of the picture J Solomon were at 151 Lavender Hill SW11 and it looks like there was a picture framers at that address through to at least 2009 – Paul Slack Frames.

  2. 1866 High Street, Borough, London. Mary Ann was a widow on marriage certificate - Her father was  Thomas MATTHEWS a Shoe and Boot Maker
1866 18 Russell Street, Brixton Road, North Brixton, Lambeth, London (baptism of Harry Ernest)
1868 5 Portland Terrace, Portland Place North, Clapham Road, North Brixton, Lambeth, London (baptims of Arthur Edmund)

1886 86 Tyneham Road, Battersea, Wandsworth, London (baptism of Charles Frank)
1891 86 Tyneham Road, Battersea, Surrey
House had four rooms, two up and two down plus a scullery. In 1903 Charlotte Alice POWELL gave this address on her marriage certificate.
1901 86 Tyneham Road, Battersea, London
1911 86 Tyneham Road, Lavender Hill, Battersea, London. Mary is down as having been married 44 years and having had 11 children 9 survive and 2 have died at the date of this Census. So it appears that all the names children above were alive in 1911 but I cannot find the first child Harry Ernest after the 1881 Census and I can find not trace on Census or marriage of Elizabeth Ada after the 1881 Census.
  3. We are not certain this marriage is correct although it was a marriage to a Mary Ann MATTHEWS, there are two birth dates for George, the one born in 1842 had a father Joseph and was in Bedfordshire on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 Census, his baptism detail can be found, I can find not other mention of the one born in 1838. There are two deaths of a George BERRILL in Bedfordshire in June quarter 1864 so perhaps he died just after marriage, especially as I cannot find him on the 1871 Census and by this time Mary Ann had married again.
  4. 1866 18 Russell Street, Brixton Road, North Brixton, Lambeth, London (baptism of Harry Ernest)
1871 3 Southville Cottages, Vauxhall, Surrey
1881 54 Tyneham Road, Battersea, Surrey
1891 Not found as Henry or Harry
1901 Not found as Henry or Harry
  5. 1868 5 Portland Terrace, Portland Place North, Clapham Road, North Brixton, Lambeth, Surrey (baptism of Arthur Edmund)

    1891 Not found
1892 86 Tyenham Road, Battersea, Surrey (address at first marriage) he is down as single
1896 26 Barnett Road, Battersea, Surrey (address at second marriage) he is down as a widower)
1899 69 Grayshott Road, Battersea, Wandworth, London (baptism of Marjorie Maggie)
1900 86 Tyneham Road, Battersea, Wandworth, London (baptism of Beatrice Ivy)

Originally we were  able to find Elizabeth Ada after the 1881 Census.  We believe the following postcard was sent by Elizabeth Ada to Minnie May about Arthur. However because of the address on the card below coming from Lavender Hill on the 1911 Census there is an Elizabeth Ada CROOME of the right age born in Lambeth living at 17 Lavender Hill who I think is the correct person. I have shown details above although I cannot find a marriage, Her husband had been married before, so perhaps although shown as being married 20 years and therefore married in 1891 perhaps they did not marry. I cannot find a death for his first wife.

The front of this picture shows a group of men entitled

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
