Aged 21
  1. 1841 Census - Lower Odcombe, Somerset. I believe I have found correct family but Father is down as Henry not William, but mother is correct as Frances and the two children on the 1851 Census, Thomas and Eliza are there and it is in the correct village. Large family, all Weavers, Head, Henry aged 50 a Cord Winder, Frances 45 a Weaver, John 20 a Weaver, William 18 a Weaver, Thomas 15 a Weaver, James 13 a Weaver, Mary 11 a Glover, Eliza 7 and  Ann 4
    1851 Census - Odcombe/Adcombe, Somerset
Have found Thomas on 1851 census, his occupation is down as above as Jack of all Trades which has been crossed through, so I assume it was not accepted as an occupation. He was living with his parents at Odcombe/Adcombe, Somerset. His father was William Matthews, a Labourer aged59 born Shepton George, Dorset, his mother, Frances Matthews was 65 and a Laundress born Odcombe, Somerset, he had a sister still at home, Eliza Matthews who was 16 and a Glover who was born in Odcombe, Somerset. Note we had the birth place as Adcombe, but I would think from this Census it was Odcombe as that is how it is registered whereas details from further Censuses are after they moved and is only an interpretation on the handwriting.
1861 Census - East Side of the Back Lane, Dorking, Surrey. Also living with them was a Mary ABBOTT, mother-in-law, widow, age 59, born Yeovil, Somersetshire. (see 1861 Note 2 for comments about Mary ABBOTT)
1871 Census - 4 Francis Terrace, New Road, Rotherhithe, Surrey
1872 Frances Terrace, New Road, Rotherhithe, London (baptism of Sarah Ann and Ellen Mary)
1881 Census - 193 Rotherhithe New Road, Rotherhithe, Surrey
1891 Census - 38 Dilston Grove, Rotherhithe, Surrey - Thomas was a Widower
1901 Census - 99 Raymouth Road, Rotherhithe, Surrey - Thomas a Widower was a Boarder living on his own means.
  2. 1841 Parsonage Lane, Closworth, Somerset (this is in Yeovil district so fairly certain correct person).
Order of people in Household were as follows
    Henry ABBOTT 40 Ag Lab
    Ann ABBOTT aged 45
    Henry ABBOTT aged 20
    Theresa ABBOTT aged 8 and
    Mary Ann SWATRIDGE aged 11
1851 Census - Not found at present
1861 Census - East Side of the Back Lane, Dorking, Surrey. Also living with them was a Mary ABBOTT, mother-in-law, widow, age 59, born Yeovil, Somersetshire. This gives us the name of Thomas's wife. (please read the following)  On 18th November 2011 I had an email for a Lynne CROWE in Canada about this family. She points out that there was a marriage in June 1852 of a Thomas MATTHEWS to a Mary Ann SWATRIDGE, so although on this Census the mother-in-law is down as ABBOTT, with the details I have above on the 1841 Census we now believe the childs, name was SWATRIDGE we are still trying to solve the problem of why she wal living with an ABBOTT family on the 1841 Census but had the name SWATRIDGE.
1871 Census - 4 Francis Terrace, New Road, Rotherhithe, Surrey
1872 Frances Terrace, New Road, Rotherhithe, London (baptism of Sarah Ann and Ellen Mary)
1881 Census - 193 Rotherhithe New Road, Rotherhithe, Surrey
  3. 1861 Census - East Side of the Back Lane, Dorking, Surrey. Also living with them was a Mary ABBOTT, mother-in-law, widow, age 59, born Yeovil, Somersetshire.  (see comment on Note 2 above)
  4. 1861 Census - East Side of the Back Lane, Dorking, Surrey. Also living with them was a Mary ABBOTT, mother-in-law, widow, age 59, born Yeovil, Somersetshire.  (see comment on Note 2 above)
1871 Census - 4 Francis Terrace, New Road, Rotherhithe, Surrey
    1878 3 Peel Terrace
1881 Census - 35 Macks Road, Bermondsey, Surrey
1891 Census - 15 Brannock Road, Rotherhithe, Surrey
    1895 320 Southwark Park Road.
1901 Census - 63 Abbeyfield Road, Rotherhithe, London
1911 Census - 14 Grove Green Road Leytonstone E. There is a Rosina Ellen SYKES aged 41 a Boarder, Married born Devonport, Devon with the family.
  5. 1861 Census - East Side of the Back Lane, Dorking, Surrey. Also living with them was a Mary ABBOTT, mother-in-law, widow, age 59, born Yeovil, Somersetshire.  (see comment on Note 2 above)
1871 Census - 4 Francis Terrace, New Road, Rotherhithe, Surrey
1881 Census - 32 Raglan Street, St Pancras, Kentish Town, London, Frederick J MATTHEWS, was a boarder, age 21, an Engine Cleaner, born Dorking, Surrey.
1891 Census - Cannot find at present, There is a Frederick J MATTHEWS of the correct age, but down as being born in Bermondsey and occupation as a Tinman, he is married with one child, but I cannot prove he is the correct Frederick MATTHEWS, especially as he put himself down as being born in Dorking on the 1881 Census. Just searching for Frederick and Dorking on Ancestry.com gives no reasonable responses.
  6. 1871 Census - 4 Francis Terrace, New Road, Rotherhithe, Surrey
1881 Census - 193 Rotherhithe New Road, Rotherhithe, Surrey
1891 Census - 34 Cammell? Road, Deptford, London

1911 Census - Not found at present.
There is a Stanley William Alder THOMPSON baptised 27th October 1897 at All Saints, Rotherhithe, Southwark, London. The father is down as William John, not William Alder but the mother is down as Sarah Ann, they are living at 67 Woodpecker Road, New Cross, London and William was a Brewer (I do think this is a child of this couple) Now confirmed now found on 1901 Census)

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
