  1. 1839 Kings Head, Court, Hoxton, Hackney, London (baptism of Louisa Ann)
1841 Placement Cottages, Bethnal Green, London
I have found baptisms for Eliza, William, John and Jane which I will add, but it does not solve anything. I have now found two more baptisms for a William Robert MEARS as father and Jemima as mother in 1843 and 1845, so I now think that the first two children, Eliza and William CARPENTER were children of Eliza and a William CARPENTER who was also a French Polisher, still queries who fathered Mary Ann and Myra. I think that Marci was a child of  William Robert MEARS and Mary Carpenter. The parents are William and Mary and he is a French Polisher. So were all the children from Eliza the children of William John MEARS and Mary Jane CARPENTER née MAYNARD. On the marriage of Eliza it says her father was William CARPENTER - French Polisher, but we know at that time Mary Jane CARPENTER was not married to William John MEARS, so was Eliza's father also a William CARPENTER and a French Polisher or did she not know that her "parents" were not married at that time.
1843 Castle Street, Hoxton, Hackney, London (baptisms of William John)
1845 New Inn Broadway, Hoxton, Hackney, London (baptism of Jemima Rebecca)
1851 7 Norfolk Place, Shoreditch, London. William MEARS is show with his wife. She is spelt as Jamima as is her daughter. This is a new find and helps to sort out the problems I ave been having with this chart. I have now amended the chart to what I think the final situation is. 1861 26 Victoria Street, Hackney road, Bethnal Green, London,
1867 Whitechapel, London (at marriage) Father John MEARS - French Polisher.
1871 9 Elizabeth Place, Shoreditch, London. (see note 5 1861 Census) There is something strange about William and Mary, on the 1851 Census they are down as William and Mary CARPENTER, on the 1861 Census he is down as William MEARS and she is down as Mary CARPENTER, on this Census they are down as William and Mary MEARS, there is then a child a John CARPENTER who is 19 on the chart above and appearing on the 1861 Census as son but on this census he is down as son-in-law and then there is Jane 13 as on the chart above who is down as daughter-in-law. I think the answer is that William was not married to Mary until between 1861 and 1871 and the children were born in her name. I do not think they are son-in-law and daughter-in-law but in relation to William, step son and step daughter, but not really that as if they were in fact the children of William MEARS which I think they were they were son and daughter even though William and Mary were not married. So perhaps they felt, as they had got married that by law John and Jane were now truly children of William.
I have a problem now with this chart as I feel it should be called MEARS 0501 and that Mary should have CARPENTER by her name.
Have now found the marriage for William and Mary on 28th May 1867 in St Mary, Whitechapel London which I think proves my theory about this couple. He is down as a Widower and she as a Widow. He is down as William Robert MEARS age full a French Polisher and his father was a John MEARS a French Polisher. For Mary, she is down as Mary Ann CARPENTER aged full, a Widow father William MAYNARD, a Labourer. the witnesses to the marriage were a Charles George FRAMES and a William WHITE. Possibly either one or both of the previous husband/wife were still alive until 1867 and so they could not get married until then. There might be some doubt as to where some of the children on the chart belong, I think they were all children of Mary as all named CARPENTER and we know that the children born after 1851 are children of William and Mary but those before might be the children from her first marriage to a ??? CARPENTER.

  2. 1841 Cannot find anything definite on this Census for Mary Jane, either at Mary Jane MAYNARD or Mary Jane CARPENTER or any marriage for a MAYNARD to a CARPENTER.

Although having found on the national probate register in 1931 as a definite as her niece Charlotte RONEY is a beneficiary, I cannot find on any Census. Have tried all alternatives, assuming George had died, that she use her second name Rebecca, that they spelt the name HAZEL not HAZEL etc.

  9. 1861 26 Victoria Street, Hackney road, Bethnal Green, London,
1871 9 Elizabeth Place, Shoreditch, London.

  10. 1842 Gloucester Street, Hoxton, Hackney, London (baptism of Eliza)
1851 1 Munday Street, Shoreditch, London.
1861 26 Victoria Street, Hackney road, Bethnal Green, London, father is William\ Mears? I assume there should also be a CARPENTER, he is head aged 42 a French Polisher born not known Sussex, then down as mother but surely wife, is Mary CARPENTER aged 40 born West of England, Somerset has been added. Or was Mary Carpenter the mother of the children whereas William MEARS was not, but William CARPENTER a French Polisher is the father given on the marriage certificate of Eliza.
1862 5 Reeves Place, Shoreditch, London (at marriage) Father William Carpenter - French Polisher
1871 5 Reform Place, Haggerston East, St Leonard, Shoreditch, London
1871 5 Reform Place, Haggerston East, St Leonard, Shoreditch, London (baptism of Eliza)
1881 15 Frederick Terrace, St John Hackney, Hackney, London
1891 127 Condall street, Hoxton Old Town, Shoreditch, London. There were two visitors with the family both House Decorators.
1901 25 Derby Road, South-West Hackney, London. (for the moment, until I sort this out and add to chart, the following are the people on this census in order and exactly as listed: Alfred GILBERT Head married aged 30 a Cabinet Maker (Furniture) born Devonshire (place not known), Eliza aged 29 born Hoxton, London, Lillie Daughter aged 10born Dalston, London, William DONALD Father in Law aged 47 Cabinet Maker (Furniture) born Hoxton, London, Eliza DONALD Mother in Law aged 45 born Hoxton, London, William MUIRDEN Brother in Law aged 24 Cabinet Maker (Furniture born Hoxton, London. Willie down as a Boarder but I think a son of William and Clara) aged 2 born Dalston, London and Clara Sister in Law aged 22 born Hoxton, London.

  11. 1844 Minery Street, Hoxton, Hackney, London (baptism of William)
1851 1 Munday Street, Shoreditch, London.
1861 26 Victoria Street, Hackney road, Bethnal Green, London,
1871 6 Gibhalt Road?, Hackney Road, Bethnal Green, London. I think this is the correct couple but ages given at marriage do not quite tie up with ages on this Census, but Emma is one year older than William which they were at marriage and he is a French Polisher. However they married in 1862 and they appear to have two children Emma 15 a Machinist and Mary A 11 both born Shoreditch, Middlesex born before the marriage date and going on the ages on this Census William would have only been 14 when Emma was born and Emma only one year older at 15. So going on the fact that the 29 in 1871 means William was born in 1842 when in fact he was actually born in 1844 would mean that this brings the age for when they had Emma to 12 for William and 13 for Emma his wife. However with the large amount of problems I have had with this chart with relationships, ages etc I still think this is the correct couple. They also had the following children all born in Shoreditch. Alice aged 8, Maria aged 4 and Rose C aged 2 and William A aged 1 month.

  12. 1851 1 Munday Street, Shoreditch, London.
1861 26 Victoria Street, Hackney road, Bethnal Green, London,

  13. 1851 1 Munday Street, Shoreditch, London. It is possible that Myra and Marcia are the same child, Myra was 5 months old on the 1851 Census, Marcia was 10 years old on the 1861 Census, cannot find either of them on the BMD.

  14. 1861 26 Victoria Street, Hackney road, Bethnal Green, London,  It is possible that Myra and Marcia are the same child, Myra was 5 months old on the 1851 Census, Marcia was 10 years old on the 1861 Census, cannot find either of them on the BMD.

I have had a lot of problems with this chart and it has been altered numerous times. The problem was that William MEARS appears to have started living with Mary Jane MAYNARD before with his first wife or Mary's first husband died and possibly had children. The question was which children belonged to whom. I think the chart above now reflects the situation correctly, but it is possible that some of the notes are confusing as information had been added as I have found it. And have been moved in position as I have moved children from one spot to another. The main problem I had was the both the men were William and they were both French Polishers.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.

If you have comments, alterations, corrections, amendments etc. please follow the details to be found on the Home Page to contact me.
