Mother Ruth aged 42 down as having been married 19 years and having had 9 children 8 survive and 1 had died at the date of this Census. Down as Home Duties she was born in Dane Hill, Sussex. All children born in Hove, Sussex. Charles aged 16 a Grocery Assistant (Grocer), George aged 13 a Butchers Assistant (Butcher), then Alfred followed by Thomas 6 a School Boy, Robert 4 a School boy and Albert 1 also down as a School Boy.

    1940 Civilian War Dead Husband of S. Phillips, of Forresters Arms, Shaw's Corner, Redhill. Injured at Redhill; died same day at East Surrey Hospital, Redhill. (CGWC Web Site)
    Information about the Foresters Arms, Redhill, Surrey
    On the 24th Feb 1938, A Phillips took over, but he was killed by enemy action in 1940. His widow remarried to become Mrs S Meadows and continued tenancy until 9th November 1967, when Mr R H Craze took over. He handed on the tenancy to J R Mullenger on 29th August 1974, who in turn passed it to Mr A T Clapp circa March 1977.
    Found the following information about the Foresters Arms, assume that Alfred Edward PHILLIPS was one of the men that died
    Reigate: Shaw's Corner, 1940, 1st or 2nd Sunday in August, approximately 1pm: A bomb fell outside The Foresters Pub (now called The Hatch) possibly killing four men. A second bomb fell in St. Mary's Cemetery. Holmesdale Road Cottages which backed onto the Railway Line near Reigate Station were demolished during a night raid as was Mr Holmes, the vet's house in Warren Road.

Mother Jessie aged 39 down as having been married 14 years and having had 5 children all of whom survive at the date of this Census. She was born in Kings Lynn, Norfolk. Children first Grace Lilian followed by Edward James Rd RANSOM aged 8 born Kings Lynn, Norfolk, Arthur aged 6 born Kings Lynn, Norfolk, Violet aged 4 born Garton, Norfolk and Walter Noal (sic) aged 1 born Kings Lynn, Norfolk
