    We believe that Thomas SETTERFIELD (SUTTERFIELD) born in Margate and who lived in Boston, Lincolnshire and died in 1866 in Margate is this Thomas: An Ann Mabberley on 24th March 2012 sent me information regarding Thomas including the following Newspaper report of an Inquest for a Thomas SETTERFIELD, I will over the next few weeks try to find enough information to support her ideas;
    Kentish Gazette
    Tuesday 27 February 1866
    MARGATE— Death by Falling from the Pier Steps.—An inquest was held at the Town Hall on Saturday afternoon, before W. H. Payn, Esq., Coroner, on the body of Thomas Setterfield, mariner, aged 67 years, who met with his death by a fall from the pier steps into the harbour. From the evidence of John Setterfield, brother of the deceased, it appeared that the deceased spent an hour at his house on Wednesday night, and left about 9 o'clock to go on board his vessel in the harbour, when he was perfectly sober, and about half-past six o'clock on Thursday morning he was sent for to the police-station to see the deceased, who had been injured. He ordered him to be taken to his (witness's) house, where he received every attention until he expired about quarter past 8 on Friday morning. Edward Hinge, a coast-guardsman at Margate, stated that was on duty at the Droit-office on Wednesday night about half-past 11, when he saw a sailor coming down the pier and enquired of him if he was policeman and had the watch. He told him he was not policeman but that he had the watch. Deceased said he had been to see his friends, and was then going on board his vessel. He told him he could not get aboard his vessel as she was aground, but he went down the pier accompanied by the witness, and when opposite to the vessel he saw he could not get on board. He said he would go and get in the boat which was lying astern of vessel, and witness told him he had better not, for he did not think he could get into the boat. He made an attempt to go down the steps, and when about half-way down seemed to have lost all control over himself, and reeled against the inner wall and then fell overboard into harbour, Witness hailed the schooner, and the men came deck. He told them that their mate was overboard, and one of the men got from the vessel down the stern rope into the boat, but said could not reach the deceased. He told him get a boat-hook, which he did, and with assistance got him in the boat. Deceased was walking very steady, and talked very reasonable when he first saw him.— Mr. W. F. Hunter said he was called see the deceased, and on examining him found a small wound on the left side of the head near the back; but there was fracture of the skull. He afterwards attended him at his brother's house, and was sent for Friday morning about half-past 8, when found deceased quite dead. He considered his death was occasioned by concussion of the brain and spinal cord. Considerable discussion here ensued among the jury on the Coroner summing up, whether they ought not to append a recommendation to the verdict that the pier authorities put chain some protection down the steps, or a light on the pier for the convenience of persons using the harbour, as there was not even a rope or life buoy at this part of the pier.—Mr. S. S. Chancellor, clerk of the pier, said had all the apparatus for restoring life in cases of drowning, in the Droit office ; but this was considered of little or no use when he (Mr. Chancellor) was asleep on the Marine Terrace. The jury then returned the following verdict: - " That Thomas Setterfield died from injuries received by accidentally falling down the stone steps, and rebounding from there into the harbour." The Coroner was directed to write to the Mayor and Council, and lay before them the views of the jury.

Henry SUTTERFIELD down as son-in-law aged 23 a General Labourer born Boston, Lincolnshire and down as married then Susan SUTTERFIELD down as daughter-in-law aged 21 a Dressmaker born Spalding, Lincolnshire and then Ann SUTTERFIELD down as Step daughter aged 4 born Boston, Lincolnshire. From the first child I would think Thomas had been married before, then I think Henry is a child of Jane before they married, Susan is actually the wife of Henry, and Ann is ?, they were married in 1875 so her age being 4 should mean it is a child of theirs, but then it should have the name KIRK, have not found marriage as yet for Henry and Susan if indeed Susan is Henry's wife and it could be their child but why put down step daughter not Granddaughter but it was not his Granddaughter so perhaps it should be Step Granddaughter, which having worked through it I would think is the most likely. (More work needs to be done)

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
