    A list of births of the family of Henry John STEDMAN found by Gladys WOOD née THOROGOOD at the beginning of 1998 indicates that the full name of Elizabeth BARRY was Mary Ann Elizabeth BARRY, this is the first indication that she had any other names. This might make it possible to find her marriage and birth certificates. It also gave us a complete list of birth dates for all the children, making it even more unlikely that the name of Fanny which appears in the 1891 census was correct. I have now found her marriage certificate which uses the name Elizabeth. I have therefore put Elizabeth back as the first name and followed them with the two other in parenthesis.
    Elizabeth lived with her youngest son and his family at 31 Terrace Street, Gravesend, Kent for the last years of her life until just before her death when she went into a home.

    For many years I have had James's second name down as REDMAN, but I realised that possibly it was given to him as the name of his mother's father and looking on the BMD this is the case. So he was registered as REDMOND, he appears in lots of places as REDMAN.

    Told he is the oldest, but as he does not appear on the 1881 census have left him here, he could have left home by the time of the 1881 census as he would have been around 23 but that would have made his parents, around 18 when they had him.
    Death details for Sydney taken from NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, it shows the name of Sydney's father as Henry John so I think it is correct.
    On a letter from Elizabeth Maud STEDMAN to her daughter Maude, Maxwell STEDMAN in Australia is mentioned, believe he was a son of Sydney. The address given was 775 Dowling Street Redfern New South Wales Australia
    On a letter as shown in these notes the address is given for 775 Dowling street, Redfern, Australia. On the 1963 Electoral Roll for Redfern New South Wales, Australia I have found the following

    STEDMAN Irene Jean 775 Dowling street, home duties F
    STEDMAN Mary Elizabeth 775 Dowling street, home duties, F
    STEDMAN Maxwell 775 Dowling street, sales representative M

    I think because the address being the same at that found in my mother-in-laws belongings that this must be the same family. At present I do not know where the various members fit in. Is one of them the wife of Maxwell and the other children of him, or is Mary Elizabeth actually his mother and is the "Lizzie" that I have shown above as the wife of Sydney MAXWELL.
    From this the NSW marriage details show that a Maxwell Sebastian STEDMAN married an Irene Jean STEDMAN in 1952 in Five Dock district, New South Wales, her maiden name was HALL. (This still leaves Mary Elizabeth STEDMAN as possible mother of Maxwell)

    1911 Census - 9 The Hill, Northfleet, Kent. Percy is down as a cousin with Frederick Alexander HANCOCK as the Head of Household, he was 40 a Hairdresser born Northfleet, Kent. His wife was Ellen Anne aged 34 also born Northfleet, Kent and down as being married 15 years. There was seven children of Frederick and Ellen. See HANCOCK Chart 0303 for details of this family.
