    1911
STEALING FLOWERS FROM GRAVE. Horace Birchall (15), 8, Jordan Well, and Oswald Blythe (15), 99, Chandos Street, summoned by Josiah Rees Stamps for stealing cut flowers, value Is. 6d, from a grave in the London Road Cemetery.
Mr. C. H. Wood (Town Clerk’s Office) prosecuted.
Complainant said lived at Green Lane, Chester Road, Erdington, and went to the London Road Cemetery, on May 27, at 3 p.m., where he put some flowers his wife’s grave. The stolen ones were worth Is. 6d. The four carnations produced were similar to those which he placed on the grave. Witness said that it was through no vindictive spirit that he was prosecuting, but a wish to serve the public.
John Liggins, 2, Harnall Lane West, gravedigger at the Cemetery, said that was on patrol duty in the Cemetery on Sunday, May 28th and noticed some flowers on this grave, including eight carnations. Later in the morning saw the two defendants the grave. They took all the carnations off, and put them in their pockets. Witness followed them when they went from the grave, and they ran away. Blythe went over the wall into the Road, and witness caught Birchall by the Cemetery gates. He took him into the office, where he refused to give his name and address. Witness asked for the flowers, and admitted taking them from the grave, but said he had thrown them away while being chased. Defendant asked witness let him and say more about it. Witness subsequently went to the locality of the theft, and saw two little girls carrying two carnations, and found two others on a path along which the boys ran.
P.C. Bradshaw said that at 11.30 on May 28 he was called the Cemetery lodge where he saw Birchall detained. Witness questioned him and he admitted having the flowers off the grave, at the same time incriminating the other defendant. Defendants pleaded guilty.
Mr. Wood said that a good deal of this sort of thing went on at the Cemetery. On the previous Sunday flowers were taken from this grave. The Chairman remarked that the Bench would like express their thanks to the complainant for bringing the case. It was a most abominable offence, they could not understand boys, who had been apparently well educated, doing a disgraceful thing of this sort. It was sad enough to lose one’s relations without having the flowers stolen from their grave.
Defendants were each fined 10s, or in default 14 days’ hard labour.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
