  1. 1841 Census - Spin, Birstall, Yorkshire. (Have now found on this Census and also on the IGI so first wife was a Mary.
1851 Census - Spin?, Gomersal, Yorkshire. Because of the place and the occupation I am sure this is the correct John, however he is down as being 41 so shown slightly younger than he actually, was, I only have his birth as shown on the IGI for baptism as Birstall, on this Census it is shown as Cleckheaton but they appear to be the same place or very near to each other, then his wife Maria is shown as being 26 but there is a child Henry 15 another Ann 13 which would make Maria only 11 years old when she had Henry and 13 when she had Ann so I think this must be a second marriage, the next child is Sarah 8 which again could be a child of the first wife as then we have John William 2 and Sophia 1 which I would think are the children of Maria. As Maria is so much younger than John I would think that is why he has said he is younger than he actually was. Will try and find on other censuses
1861 Census - Spin Lane, Gomersal, Yorkshire. There was a Mary Jane HARTLEY, aged 14, down as daughter in law, a Cloth Birler born Mirfield, Yorkshire with the family. I would therefore assume it was a daughter of Maria and that Maria has been married before she married John, so in fact her maiden name would not have been HARTLEY. Have left as I have it on chart above until I find further information.
  2. 1841 Census - Spin, Birstall, Yorkshire.
  3. 1846 Lower R0ad (at marriage) Father Isaac CASS - Blacksmith
1848 Gomersal, Yorkshire - at marriage - Father Isaac CASS - Blacksmith
1851 Census - Spin?, Gomersal, Yorkshire.
1861 Census - Spin Lane, Gomersal, Yorkshire. There was a Mary Jane HARTLEY, aged 14, down as daughter in law, a Cloth Birler born Mirfield, Yorkshire with the family.
1871 Census - Spin Lane, Gomersal, Yorkshire
1881 Census - 12 Stansfield Street, Halifax, Yorkshire. There was a Maria PLEWDON? aged 29 a niece, a widow, born Gomeral, Yorkshire with the family. There was also a William CROSLEY, a Lodger, aged 25 a Tailor born Ellard, Yorkshire.
1891 2 Westcliff, Lytham, Lancashire. With Thomas and Maria was Rachael MASON aniece aged 46 a Wool Sheet Mender born Mirfiled, Yorkshire and Sarah THORNTON a visitor aged 41 a Domestic Servant Hosemaid born Gomersal, Yorkshire.
1901 14 Newstead Grove, Halifax, Yorkshire. Maria is a widow again on this census. with her is Sophia THORNTON daughter aged 51 born Birstall, Yorkshire.
1911 Plane Tree's Farm Yard, Lower Shelf, Halifax, Yorkshire. Sophia THORNTON was with her mother on this Census.
  4. 1846 Spen, Parish of Birstal, Yorkshire (at marriage) Father Joseph HARTLEY - Labourer
  5. 1891 2 Westcliff, Lytham, Lancashire. With Thomas and Maria was Rachael MASON a niece aged 46 a Wool Sheet Mender born Mirfield, Yorkshire and Sarah THORNTON a visitor aged 41 a Domestic Servant Hosemaid born Gomersal, Yorkshire.
  6. 1841 Census - Spin, Birstall, Yorkshire.
1851 Census - Spin?, Gomersal, Yorkshire.
    1861 Upper Lane, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire
1871 West Gate, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire. Children Mary aged 8 a Scholar born Birstal, Yorkshire and Sarah aged 2 born Birstal, Yorkshire.
1881 Brooke Street, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire. Children Mary aged 18 a Woollen Weaver born Cleckheaton, Yorkshire and Sarah aged 12 a Scholar born Cleckheaton, Yorkshire.
1891 8 Brooke Street, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire. Children Mary aged 28 a Flannel Weaver and Sarah aged 22 a Milliners Assistant born born Cleckheaton, Yorkshire.
  7. 1841 Census - Spin, Birstall, Yorkshire.
1851 Census - Spin?, Gomersal, Yorkshire.
1871 Census - Spin Lane, Gomersal, Yorkshire. There is an Ann THORNTON on this Census who could be this daughter but she has been put down as 23 which is ten years younger than this daughter, so it is possible that is is a daughter from Maria's previous marriage.
  8. 1851 Census - Spin?, Gomersal, Yorkshire.
  9. 1851 Census - Spin?, Gomersal, Yorkshire.
1861 Census - Spin Lane, Gomersal, Yorkshire. There was a Mary Jane HARTLEY, aged 14, down as daughter in law, a Cloth Birler born Mirfield, Yorkshire with the family.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
