  1. 1842 East stoke, Dorset (baptism of William John)
    1861 Wool, Dorset
1871 Wool, Dorsetshire. There was a Walter CLOTHIER a Lodger aged 20 a Journeyman Blacksmith born Marden Newston, Dorsetshire with the family.
1881 East View, Chale, Isle of Wight, Hampshire. With the family was Margaret DIFFEY aged 18 born Dorsetshire.
1891 3 Eastview, Chale, Isle of Wight, Hampshire (Down as John on this Census)
  2. 1851 Wool, Dorset
1861 Allen House, Haggerston West, Shoreditch, Middlesex. Indexed on ancestry.com as DEFFY, it is DIFFEY on actual census. Servant to Edmund E HOOPER (43) Gen Prac. M.D, M.R.C.S., London L.S.A.? born Loughton, Essex, his wife Julia C (36) born India, daughter Julia P (17) born Shoreditch,  Middlesex, step-son George T O WOLLANTON (22) Surgeon's Assistant born India, partner  Robert G WATTS (27) unmarried Gen Prac. M.D, M.R.C.S., L.S.A.? born Hampton on Sea,  Gloucestershire. Another servant was Hannah L STEVENS (20) House Servant born  Bethnal Green, Middlesex
Copies of original registers were searched from 1843-1848 and no Jane DIFFEY registration was found.
There was a Frances Jane DIFFEY registered in the March quarter of 1847. However, Jane is shown clearly as age 6 on the 1851 census and age 17 on the 1861 census giving birth years of 1845 and 1844. But her brother George was shown as age 8 and his birth was registered in March quarter 1846.
And when she died in 1868 Jane's age was shown as 23 so born 1848. Therefore, as George was shown as being older than his sister Jane, and because of her age at death, her approximate birth date has been shown as about 1847.
    More research required!
Married the same quarter as brother Henry and she married a WELLSTEAD which was the surname of the wife of her brother Joseph.
  3. 1851 Wool, Dorset Age 1 month as Esther
    1861 Wool. Dorset as DIFFEY
1871 Wool, Dorsetshire. There was a Walter CLOTHIER a Lodger aged 20 a Journeyman Blacksmith born Marden Newston, Dorsetshire with the family. (Down as Hester on this Census) (On the BMD she is Esther Louisa - on each census it varies)
1881 East View, Chale, Isle of Wight, Hampshire. With the family was Margaret DIFFEY aged 18 born Dorsetshire.  (Down as Louisa on this Census)
1891 3 Eastview, Chale, Isle of Wight, Hampshire
It appears that Esther married a William WELLSTEAD and had eight children in total, I would think this was the same William WELLSTEAD that married Esther's sister Jane, Jane died in 1868, so I think he would have remarried her sister as shown in 1869.
There was an Esther DIFFEY marriage in the Wareham District, Dorset in June 1871, but when looking at the information on the 1881 census the age and place of birth did ot match, and information on later census returns could not be found to clarify the matter.

  10. 1891 3 Eastview, Chale, Isle of Wight, Hampshire
1901 District Millers Orphan Houses, Ashley, Bristol, Gloucestershire. Lucy was in an orphanage in Bristol as an Inmate
There are two children born on the Isle of Wight with DORE as surname and WELSTEAD as mother maiden name

There appears to be some confusion about the spelling of WELLSTEAD, it varies form Census to Census and on BMD details, in a lot of cases it is shown as WELSTEAD, only one L. In some of the families they appear to have adopted the one L spelling.
There is a need to put the WELLSTEAD 0600 Chart on going back as it would appear that a sister of William John, Elizabeth also married a DIFFEY as shown on DIFFEY Chart 0501.
When I started this chart on 1st July 2011 I did not expect to find as much as I have. As can be seen I have found families for all of the children. The only problem is that my original informant told me there were 8 children and at the moment I have only found 7 of them. I do not know if the additional child was born in Dorset or on the Isle of Wight and have no details for him/her at all at present.
There are problems as Esther (Hester) Louisa used all three names shown at different times. I have shown it as such as she was actually registered as Esther Louisa but, for instance on the baptism of Walter and Cynthia she used the name Louisa. The same goes for her husband, he was registered as shown, as William John but often is found as John. With the confusion of the surname as well it is worth trying  all of the alternatives when searching for this family.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
