    Information from Min FIELD
"Mum gave Philip a medal at the time Ernest was killed. It was enamel in the shape of a miniature iron cross with a "W" in the centre" - which is what my notes say. However, it is now too late to ask Min to explain more fully.
We do have a miniature iron cross with a "W" in the centre which was given to us by Philip FIELD, so we assume this is the same item. Philip FIELD wrote that his mother gave him the medal about 1986 and told him that her mother received it from the Army shortly after Ernest was killed in 1916. "However, from the date on the medal being 1914 this cannot be true as a supposedly "death" medal. I think that it is probably a German miniature (or dress) Iron Cross, given to someone ....." (rest of letter now lost!)
We did show the "medal" to an expert who thought that perhaps it belonged to a German soldier and had been acquired by someone on the battle field, and then, because it had the initial "W" in the centre, it was given to Ernest. Being found among his belongings the army then returned it to Emma. We shall never know!

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
