7 DACKOMBE
History by Doreen Williams

Ten years ago I began what was to become a totally absorbing undertaking - the history of the Dackombe's. I had nothing whatsoever to call upon, apart from my grandfather, Daniel Richard Dackombe, had told my mother, Lilian Edith Maud, that 'they had come from France'; as I was later to find, the legend had come down more than 700 years. My efforts will help to bridge some of this long period of time - they are dedicated to my mother and her ancestors.

This history is by no means complete and, of course will never be so but with the help of my recently acquired co-researchers, John Terry and Geoffrey Mann, it will be up-dated from time to time. It is an intriguing story and, hopefully, when broadened will be even more so. Initially it will cover the period from 1375-1646 (Part 1) and will continue from 1646 onwards in Part 2. So far the Interregnum period is proving difficult and needs further research to enable a true genealogy.

For convenience the spelling of the name will generalised as DACKOMBE, although no fewer than 23 variations have been recorded; the present Dorset and Hampshire families still retain Daccombe and Dacombe spellings.
