(Charles is the child of Susan LANGDOWN and Charles (Davies/Davis) PHILLIPS
and George a child of Alice Mary
LANGDOWN and James PARSONS
(I am told that George PARSON is the one standing in the photograph he is wearing in his lapel the
Silver War Badge)
  1. 1841 Butt Lane, Bere Regis, Dorset as LANGDAWN on index. Parents - Henry and Mary LANGDOWN
1851 Shitterton, Bere Regis, Dorset. Richard, Caroline and George LANGDOWN were at this address
1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 - Caroline, with her growing family, were living with a Jacob TOMS who would appear to be the father of at least Ellen.
    1861 Not found
1864 Bere Regis, Dorset (baptism of Alice Mary)
1871 Broadwater Cottage, Bere Regis, Dorset as LANSDOWN on index. Sole occupant
1881 Woodbury Hill, Bere Regis, Dorset as married but not living with wife. Boarding with Ellen BROOM (42) widow Farm Labourer born Milbourne St Andrews, Dorset and her children Sydney (22), Herbert (20), George (14) and Frederick (12) all Ag Labourers born
Milbourne St Andrew, Dorset, Ann (9), Kate (5) Henry (3) all Scholars, and Frank (1) all four born
    Bere Regis, Dorset
1891 Woodbury Hill, Bere Regis, Dorset as LARYDOWN on index. Lodging with Ellen BROWN (51) widow Charwoman born Milbourne, Dorset, and her children Henry (13) Farm Labourer, Francis (11) and Edward (9) Scholars born Bere Regis, Dorset
IGI Baptism - submitted by a member of the LDS Church.
  2. 1841 Bereheath, Bere Regis, Dorset
    1851 Shitterton, Bere Regis, Dorset
1861 12 Shitterton Hamlet, Bere Regis, Dorset, RG9/1347 Folio 41 page 26. This information for Caroline is an interesting find. The Head of the household is a Jacob TOMS (28) unmarried Ag Lab born in Bere Regis, Dorset. Caroline LANGDOWN (29) born Bere  Regis, Dorset but no relationship to Jacob shown. There appears to have been something in the relationship box but it no longer appears there. Caroline has an occupation which could
not be made out, was it "House Keeper"? Except there are only one or two letters before the  word "house", She has two daughters, Mary (4) and Ellen (2) both born in Bere Regis, Dorset
1864 Bere Regis, Dorset (baptism of Alice Mary)
1871 Rye Hill, Bere Regis, Wareham, Dorset. The information on this census is even more intriguing as there is still no sign of her husband Richard, but the family has enlarged. Jacob TOMS (39) Ag Lab is still the head. The rest of the family are all entered as Boarders, Caroline LANGDOWN (38) Housekeeper born Bere Regis, Dorset, Mary LANGDOWN (14) Scholar born Wareham, Dorset, Ellen LANGDOWN (11) Scholar born Wareham, Dorset
John (8), Alice (6), Susan (4) all Scholars and George (1) all born Bere Regis, Dorset
1871 Bere Regis, Dorset. (baptism of George) No father mentioned
1881 Butt Lane, Bere Regis, Dorset. Again, the mystery deepens! Caroline is the Head , shown as married. Her occupation was
entered as "Wife of Ag Lab" but this has been crossed through. Her age is shown as 49 and with her are Ellen (21),a Domestic Servant, George (11) a Scholar, Jane LANGDOWN (1) daughter (but daughter of Ellen), born Bere Regis, Dorset and, "wait for it", Boarder Jacob  TOMS, unmarried (48) and still an Ag Lab. Another Boarder was Charlotte KEMPSFORD (25) unmarried Domestic Servant born Chilnote, Dorset
1891 "Stockley", Bere Regis, Dorset. Caroline LANGDOWN is now a Charwoman (59), living with her were Jane LANGDOWN (11)  granddaughter born Bere Regis, Dorset, Sydney BAKER (1) grandson born Bere Regis Dorset and, of course, Lodger Jacob TOMS (57) Farm Labourer.
    Notes for Caroline COBB
1901 Butt Lane, Bere Regis, Dorset.
It would appear that Caroline had died (she had) and we assume that Ellen LANGDOWN  married an Esau BAKER as the family living at this address are Esau BAKER (48) Labourer on Farm born Chiselbourne, Dorset, Ellen BAKER (40) wife born Bere Regis, Dorset, Jessie BAKER (14), Sydney BAKER (11), Charles (10) and Harold (3) all born Bere Regis, Dorset. Also at this address is Jacob TOMS, (6) father-in-law, widower, Estate Labourer. It would seem,
perhaps, that the children, although named LANGDOWN, Caroline's husband's name, were  actually the children of Jacob TOMS who she married in 1893 just before she died in 1895 because Richard did not die until 1893.
  3. 1841 Shitterton, Bere Regis, Dorset. Parents - Christopher and Mary TOMS (lots of siblings including a Christopher who I think appears on Cobb Chart 0423).
    1851 Shitterton, Bere Regis, Dorset
1861 12 Shitterton Hamlet, Bere Regis, Dorset, RG9/1347 Folio 41 page 26. The information for Caroline is an interesting find. The Head of the household is a Jacob TOMS. Jacob (28) unmarried Ag Lab born Bere Regis, Dorset. Caroline LANGDOWN (29) was born Bere Regis, Dorset but there is no relationship to Jacob shown. There appears to have been something in the relationship box but it no longer appears there. Caroline has an occupation which could not be made out; was it House Keeper"? Except there are only one or two letters before the word "house", She has two daughters, Mary (4) and Ellen (2) both born in Bere Regis, Dorset

Jacob TOMS (39) Ag Lab is still the head . The rest of the family are all entered as Boarders Caroline LANGDOWN (38) Housekeeper born Bere Regis, Dorset, Mary LANGDOWN (14) Scholar born Wareham, Dorset, Ellen LANGDOWN (11) Scholar born Wareham, Dorset
John (8), Alice (6), Susan (4) all Scholars and George (1) all born Bere Regis, Dorset
1881 Butt Lane, Bere Regis, Dorset. Again, the mystery deepens! Caroline is the Head , shown as married. Her occupation was entered as "Wife of Ag Lab" but this has been crossed through. Her age is shown as 49 and with her are Ellen (21),a Domestic Servant, George (11) a Scholar, Jane LANGDOWN (1)
daughter (but is Ellen's daughter), born Bere Regis, Dorset and. "wait for it". Boarder Jacob TOMS, unmarried (48) and still an Ag Lab. Another Boarder was Charlotte KEMPSFORD (25) unmarried Domestic Servant born Chilnote, Dorset
1891 "Stockley", Bere Regis, Dorset.  Caroline LANGDOWN is now a Charwoman (59), living with her were granddaughter Jane LANGDOWN (11) born Bere Regis, Dorset, grandson Sydney BAKER (1) grandson born Bere  Regis, Dorset and, of course, Lodger Jacob TOMS (57) Farm Labourer.
1901 Butt Lane, Bere Regis, Dorset as a widower. It would appear that Caroline had died (she had) and it is assumed that Ellen LANGDOWN married an Esau BAKER as the family living at this address are Esau BAKER (48) Labourer on  Farm born Chiselbourne, Dorset, Ellen BAKER (40) wife born Bere Regis, Dorset, Jessie  BAKER (14), Sydney BAKER (11), Charles (10) and Harold (3) all born Bere Regis, Dorset. Also at this address is Jacob TOMS, (6) father-in-law, widower, Estate Labourer. It would seem, perhaps, that the children, although named LANGDOWN, Caroline's husband's name, were  actually the children of Jacob TOMS who she did not marry until just before she died; this was because Richard LANGDOWN did not die until 1893.
  4. 1851 Shitterton, Bere Regis, Dorset.
  5. 1851 Bere Regis, Dorset (at baptism)
  6. 1854 Bere Regis, Dorset (at baptism)
  7. 1861 12 Shittenden Hamlet, Bere Regis, Dorset, RG9/1347 Folio 41 page 26. Living, together with her mother and sister Ellen, with Jacob TOMS (28) unmarried Ag Lab born in Bere Regis, Dorset
1871 Rye Hill, Bere Regis, Wareham, Dorset. Boarding, together with her mother and a number of siblings, with Jacob TOMS (39) Ag Lab 39. The rest of the family are all entered as Boarders

1884 Bere Regis, Dorset. (Although crossed through her father is down as Jacob TOMS)
1887 Bere Regis, Dorset (baptism of Jesse)
1889 Bere Regis, Dorset (baptism of Sydney James)
1891 Butt Lane, Bere Regis, Dorset. Living with Esau and Ellen were their children, and Robert LANGDOWN, Ellen's son Robert is on the 1891 census age 10, so born about 1881, but it would appear his parents married in 1884. Sydney was living with his grandmother, Caroline LANGDOWN, but also
    appears with his parents.
1901 Butt Lane, Bere Regis, Dorset. Living with them was Jacob TOMS (67) Widower Estate Labourer described as Father-in-law so presumably the father of Ellen BAKER née LANGDOWN although her mother lived  with Jacob TOMS she was not married to him and all her children were called
    LANGDOWN.

1881 2 Ekowe Villa, Holdenhurst, Bournemouth, Hampshire. General Servant to Edward John THOMPSON - Gas and Water Fitter Master
1891 Cranmer Road, Holdenhurst, Hampshire. Living with the PARSONS family was Jame's brother Thomas PARSONS (16) Porter Fishmonger born South Cheriton, Somerset and cousin Frank COBB (15) Labourer born  Bere Regis, Dorset

Laundress, nephew Charles DAVIES (8) Scholar and nephew Robert LANGDOWN (19)  Baker's Porter all born Bere Regis, Dorset
After finding the information on the 1901 census that living with James PARSONS was a sister-in-law Susan DAVIES it was thought that Alice's sister Susan LANGDOWN had married an Unknown DAVIES and this information, together with that of Susan's son Charles have been entered in this file accordingly.
However, it has not been possible to find a marriage for a Susan LANGDOWN to a DAVIES.
Nor has it been possible to find the birth for a Charles DAVIES about 1892 in the Wareham District, Dorset.
When entering "Susan" born about 1866 Bere Regis, Dorset into the search for the 1891 census, the only Susan who appears is a Susan PHILLIPS. This was Susan LANGDOWN who married Charles PHILLIPS on the September quarter of 1885 in the Wareham District. In 1891 Charles and Susan PHILLIPS were living at Ryehill, Bere Regis, Dorset with no children. Charles was 25, a Farm Labourer born Bere Regis, Dorset. They cannot be found on the 1901 census.
To make matters more interesting besides a Charles Herbert PARSONS being born in the December quarter of 1892 in the Wareham District, Dorset, there was also a Charles Davis PHILLIPS born in the September quarter of that year in the same District.
Searches have been made for a Susan PHILLIPS/DAVIS or DAVIES marriage and various other lines of thought have been investigated with no success. Help required!
  12. 1871 Rye Hill, Bere Regis, Wareham, Dorset. Boarding, together with her mother and a number of siblings, with Jacob TOMS (39) Ag  Lab 39. The rest of the family are all entered as Boarders
1871 Bere Regis, Dorset. (baptism of George) No father mentioned
1881 Butt Lane, Bere Regis, Dorset. Living with his mother as Head of House, Ellen (21) his sister, and Jane (1) shown as daughter (she was Ellen's daughter). Living with them was Jacob TOMS (48) unmarried  Ag Lab all born Bere Regis, Dorset
1891 Howls? Barlow, Oldland, Gloucestershire. Boarding with Dinah PERRY (58) widow and her children Anna (25) and John (16) Boot  Paring Operator all born Hevethen?, Monmouthshire
    1901 Bright Street, Kingswood, Gloucestershire
1911 London Street, Kingswood, Bristol, Somersetshire.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
